Justification
The Pillar of Light by Anna Travis was recommended to me by a friend who reads a great deal of Christian books. This book was meant for young Christian readers in middle or high school. The Pillar of Light was also reviewed and recommended on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble as well as Audible.
Response
The Pillar of Light was a light-hearted quick read. I struggled to find a Christian book that I wanted to read. I read Christian fiction voraciously as a teenager and always found joy in the characters’ triumphs over evil. This book was no different. (a) I connected with this book and the character’s struggles to make good decisions when times are difficult. I also feel similarly to the main characters as they work to support each other even with risk to themselves. (b) This book did not truly challenge my view of the world, but it did remind me of good Christian values that are simple, yet powerful. The power of forgiveness is symbolized in this book and I believe forgiveness to be a value of great importance in our daily lives. (f) Although I enjoyed this book, its ease and light-heartedness, I did not find this book to be a beautiful literary work of art. I found that the reader was being told what was happening rather than being shown or even living vicariously as other authors have led me to do.
Conclusion
The Pillar of Light is recommended for young readers interested in a Christian fiction novel. This book contains many words that a struggling reader may stumble over at first due to the world-building nature of the book. This book is light-hearted but attention grabbing at the same time.
