I was able to interview a friend of mine, Joseph, about his interests in graphic novels and comics. Joseph started reading X-Men comics when he was around 12 years old or so. He found out that he enjoyed specific characters, such as Gambit, and always tried to get the comics with him in it. (I am finding that many young boys I knew first fell in love with comics through the X-Men series.) His tastes in graphic novels have changed since he was 12. He now enjoys the longer compendiums, such as The Walking Dead, and other graphic novels for a more mature audience. He really only finds graphic novels when browsing in bookstores or while in the airport when he travels. Joseph’s favorite comic book is Alf. He keeps a framed first edition copy of Alf on his desk at work. He thinks of his forays into the graphic novel world as “adventures”. His next adventure into the world of graphic novels will be Watchmen. He says he is excited to start. Although Joseph is not as deep into graphic novels as some I have spoken to, I can still see how graphic novels, and especially comics make a huge impact on reading, especially to young children. Joseph is a long time friend from college. He is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. This interview helped me get to know him even more!
