After interviewing my cousin, Galen, I found that he too started his journey of sequential art through the world of X-Men comics. He started with just watching the cartoon and playing with the Marvel trading cards in elementary school. His father then showed him a box of comics he had stored away.
Galen reported that his change in interests definitely changed as he grew older. The stories with deeper themes about personal relationships and consequences were more interesting to him than the basic good vs. evil stories that we enjoy in our youth. He also stated that he began to read stories that were longer, which led to graphic novels or a complete series of a comic while in college.
His all-time favorite graphic novel was none other than The Watchmen. He stated, “I had never read a story that showed so many flaws in the heroes, discussed the ethics of doing things for the greater good. It was really gripping… Plus there's this whole side story that is woven sporadically throughout the novel about a shipwreck that's just nuts.”
Galen recently finished reading Y: The Last Man and keeps up with current graphic novels through a friend’s recommendations.
