Justification:

Out of Wonder is a 2018 winner of the Coretta Scott King award for illustrations. Kirkus reviews suggested this book for its power in poetry and outstanding mixed media illustrations.

Evaluation:

Out of Wonder, as the book states, is a collection of poems that celebrate poets. The poems included in this book are of varying styles and some are written in similar patterns or topics that resemble a famous poet. The figurative language in these poems paint vivid pictures in your mind and ensnare your imaginative powers to bring to life the message of the poems. In one poem titled, "How Billy Collins Writes A Poem" by Marjory Wentworth it states, “Pay attention to the smallest things: a fly buzzing near the kitchen window, bright rocks in the driveway, the handful of marbles in your pocket- the sound they make when you walk”. This poem speaks to the senses and describes how authors use them to create images in the minds of their readers.

This book also delivers an interesting design and layout for readers. The book is separated into three main parts. Part one includes poems with similar writing styles and devices as famous poets. The poems in part two are based on themes and topics that famous authors used. Part three includes poems that state their appreciation for poetry and poets. Out of Wonder also contains short background information about the poets who are mentioned in the book.

Out of Wonder is a fantastic collection of mixed media art. The variation in texture and color bring life and dimension to the illustrations. The mixed media style also gives a freedom for the illustrator to include things such as sheet music for a poem about songs. The illustrations play with size and seem to interact with the text of the poems.

Conclusion

Out of Wonder is a joyful, easy read. The celebration of poetry and poets is inspiring to any who desire to write. Aspiring authors and writers would enjoy this book. This book is recommended to include in elementary and school libraries as a unique insight into poetry.
