Justification

Another by Christian Robinson holds many awards and noteworthy mentions. Another is a Texas 2x2 book, a School Library Journal Best Picture book of 2019 and is recommended by Kirkus Reviews.

Evaluation of book

Another, is a pleasing picture book that depicts the adventures of a young girl and her cat as they travel to another universe. The illustrations are mixed media with the feel of a scrapbook. The pictures are uniquely arranged on the pages, at times prompting the reader to flip the book over. Overall the illustrations are interactive and meaningful.

Although there are no words on the page, the plot of the story moves along with fantastic pacing. The young girl enters another universe where she encounters a cat just like her own and eventually she meets other young children visiting the alternate universe as well. With only pictures, Robinson creates a meaningful dialogue between the girl and her doppleganger.

What is most outstanding is the diversity illustrated with the characters in this book. Robinson portrays characters of several different races, religions and even characters with disability. In a world that is rapidly recognizing diversity, Another is a prime example of cooperation.

Conclusion

Another is a joyful short read. It is recommended for young readers. This book would be great to use in a lesson about asking questions and inferencing while reading. People of all races, religions and abilities are celebrated in this book and thus should be enjoyed by all.
